Artificial intelligence (AI) in Polish companies – Orlen and PGL in cooperation with Google Cloud

Polish companies of strategic importance have announced closer cooperation with Google Cloud in the field of artificial intelligence. Orlen has signed an agreement on the implementation of AI solutions and advanced data analytics, while Polska Grupa Lotnicza (PGL) has announced a strategic partnership under which a data, AI and cloud competence centre will be established within the group’s structures. The information was presented at the Google Cloud Summit Poland 2025 in Warsaw.

Orlen – AI for operational efficiency

Orlen’s agreement with Google Cloud includes access to tools supporting the development of integrated digital solutions in the retail and energy sectors. The key elements of the announced cooperation are:

  • Building and developing a data platform – standardising and making better use of information from various areas of activity.
  • Implementations based on artificial intelligence and data science – support for business decisions through predictive analytics and automation of selected processes.
  • Competence development programme – employees are to gain access to mentoring by Google Cloud experts, educational platforms, and training courses and workshops on artificial intelligence.

According to the company’s announcements, artificial intelligence is used not only in office work, but also in production areas. An example of this is its use in gas drilling – the optimal positioning of equipment, supported by data analysis, is intended to enable longer and more profitable exploitation of deposits (without specifying any particular years). These activities are in line with Orlen’s long-term strategy for 2035 (‘The energy of tomorrow begins today’).

Polish Aviation Group (PGL) – a centre of competence for data, AI and the cloud

PGL, the owner of LOT Polish Airlines, among others, has announced a strategic partnership with Google Cloud, which will be centred on a Centre of Competence for Data Processing, Artificial Intelligence and Cloud Computing. The announcements emphasised that the goal is to accelerate digitisation and use artificial intelligence to build a competitive advantage in aviation.

As part of the partnership, work has been announced on, among other things:

  • the development of central analytical and AI systems,
  • the use of AI in operational processes such as route planning, sales support and technical service areas.

The detailed scope of tasks, implementation schedule and selection of technical tools are to be specified in subsequent announcements by the company and its technology partner. Statements by the PGL management emphasise that competitiveness in aviation today depends on the speed of response to passenger needs and the optimisation of data-driven processes.

What exactly might change?

  • Better data quality and insight into processes

Joint work on data platforms and analytics can facilitate the standardisation of indicators, reporting and near real-time performance monitoring. 

  • Decision support and automation

Predictive models based on artificial intelligence can help forecast demand, plan maintenance, and allocate resources in the energy sector (Orlen) and aviation operations (PGL).

  • Human capital and organisational resilience

Mentoring and training in artificial intelligence reduce the skills gap and accelerate the adoption of tools in everyday work – from back-office to production and operations.

In which industries does AI offer the most benefits?

  • Energy: AI applications usually start with predictive maintenance, optimisation of plant operation, and balancing energy supply and demand.
  • Aviation: most often involves route planning, fleet and crew allocation, dynamic pricing, and service event forecasting.

In both cases, artificial intelligence acts as a decision support tool – it does not replace domain experts, but allows for faster processing of large data sets and the identification of patterns that are not immediately apparent.

What should we expect in future announcements?

  • Precise KPIs and deadlines – publication of measurable indicators (e.g. reduction of downtime, improvement of resource utilisation rates, reduction of operating costs) and implementation schedule.
  • Description of solution architecture – clarification of how data platforms and cloud services will be integrated with existing systems.
  • Competency maps – presentation of training paths and roles related to artificial intelligence on the part of Orlen and PGL.
